"People ignore design that ignores people." - Frank Chimer

My approach to design has always been about listening to and observing people and places. My commitment to collaborative design stems from more than 26 years spent working for leading architectural and design firms and having my own design practice for over eight years.

In the late 1990’s my early experience at Hillier Architects in Princeton, NJ included comprehensive work on the sprawling ten-building Pharmacia Corporate Campus designing signage ranging from highway, parking garage, and exterior directional signs to an interior room numbering directional system and maps. My methodical attention to detail was put to work on large, urban wayfinding projects in Camden and Jersey City, NJ, and Dallas, TX. Prior to my time at Hillier Architects, my creativity shined at Daroff Design, Inc. where I engaged in resort and restaurant projects for Walt Disney World, Rainforest Café, and Sea World.

For all of the prestige of the large projects, I felt a disconnect between the needs of the clients and the nature of large design firms. In 2002, I founded Jack Hulme Design Consultants, LLC to regain a focus on the client and to ensure each project was approached with a fresh perspective. My studio was regularly involved not only directly with clients – but also with countless architects, interior designers, planners, and landscape architects – from project conception to ensure a consistent, cohesive vision was achieved and that dialogue was continuous and constructive.

My commitment to design solutions that create a strong sense of place earned the studio an impressive list of regional and national projects for the City of Perth Amboy, NJ; Princeton University; Texas A&M University, The College of New Rochelle, Hockessin Public Library, Kirkwood Public Library, Southestern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority - SEPTA, the Township of Lower Merion, PA; and the Abington Art Center.

Following the 2008 recession, I re-entered the work force as a senior environmental graphic designer and team lead for Exit Design - a nationally-recognized experience design firm specializing in healthcare wayfinding. While at Exit Design I had the pleasure of collaborating with leading architectural firms including Ballinger, Ewing Cole, Francis Cauffman, Perkins + Will, Rafael Vinoly Architects, Stantec (Granary), TRO Jung | Brannen, Inc., WHR Architects, and Wilmont Sanz.

In the fall of 2012 I began working for Ayers Saint Gross Architects in Baltimore, MD as a senior environmental graphic designer and project manager in their graphic design studio. During my time there I led signage & wayfinding implementation projects for Washington University in St. Louis, the Winston Churchill Library at George Washington University, Bowie State University, the Community College of Baltimore County's three campuses, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Frederick Community College, Grinnell College, the Maryland House I-95 Travel Plaza, and the Chesapeake House I-95 Travel Plaza. I spearheaded signage & wayfinding master plan projects for Texas A&M University, Ohio University, Kansas State University, Northwest Missouri State University, Smithsonian Institute at Front Royal, and Calvin College. Additionally, during my time at Ayers Saint Gross, I was promoted to the level of Senior Associate.

In the spring of 2018, I joined the visual solutions company Gable with the charge of creating their first Environmental Graphic Design Studio with a focus on wayfinding design-build projects. The studio continues to grow and evolve and has been involved in an impressive list of projects including the very first flagship hotel for the Shinola Company in Detroit, MI; a campus-wide wayfinding system for Howard University in Washington, DC; branded wayfinding and graphics for the new Midtown Tampa mixed-use development; and multiple mixed-use residential projects for Greystar Worldwide. I travel to Gable’s Baltimore headquarters as needed and spend the remained of my week working remotely from picturesque south-central PA.
